Energy Saving Tips

  • Replace standard light bulbs with LED lamps.
  • Unplug all electronics when they are not in use.
  • Turn the water heater to the lowest setting when you go on vacation.
  • Use ceiling fans as an alternative to air conditioning.
  • Power down computers, TVs and other electronics when not in use.
  • Be sure and install surge protectors for all modern electronic devices such as TV’s, computers, DVD’s, microwaves, etc.
  • Place all heat-generating electrical appliances in places that permit free circulation of air to cool the. Never cover them.
  • Check all electrical cords for signs of fraying. This includes the cords attached to power tools, holiday lights and seldom-used appliances.
  • Never overload power outlets with more appliances than they can support.
  • Use extension cords as a temporary solution, NOT to provide permanent power.
  • Large appliances, such as washing machines, dryers, dish washers, refrigerators and ovens should be plugged into three-prong plugs where the third prong is grounded.
  • Replace any appliances or tools that give off even a mild shock.
  • If you notice an outlet or switch is warm or heated, call for an electrician to check the wiring in your home.
  • Replace any lights that flicker. If the new bulb flickers as well, call and electrician.
  • Only use the dishwasher and washing machine when you have full loads.
  • Seal all cracks around floors, windows and doors.
  • Use high-density insulation on exterior walls and in the ceilings.
  • Keep the refrigerator temperature between 35-38 degrees and the freezer at 0 degrees
  • When purchasing new appliances and electronics, look for the Energy Star label. Rebates are commonly available for replacement of old appliances.
